A No-Excuse NOT to Shop Weekend!

This weekend there are absolutely no excuses not to be out there shopping! (Well, of course, I am sure there are some good reasons...but you get my point!) For all Georgia residents, it's a tax-free shopping weekend...which can add to some pretty significant savings! In addition, Gap, Banana, and Old Navy (and Athleta if you shop online) are offering a whopping 30% off your entire purchase all weekend long...that's even an additional discount on top of clearance/markdown items!! (See post from Tuesday about coupon.) And, just when it seems that it can't possibly get any better, Nordstrom is in it's final 3 days of its infamous Anniversary Sale this weekend (last day is Sunday, August 2). No tax and huge savings on Fall fashions?! Drop whatever you are doing and hurry to the mall...that's where I am heading right now! See you there!Link

Men's Style Monday: The Perfect Jeans Hem

I am constantly fielding questions from men about jeans fit, length and hem. In response, here are a few pointers about shopping for the perfect fit and alteration:
  • When choosing jeans, don't worry excessively about their length. It is much more important to make sure the jeans fit well around the thigh and rear.
  • If the jeans have any stretch (look at the tag for 1-2% elastic), it's okay to purchase them a bit tighter than you would feel comfortable wearing, since they will stretch out.
  • Always take your jeans home and wash them before getting them hemmed. Typically jeans will shrink in length from 1/2 inch to 1 inch...and you want to make sure they are shrunk before altering!
  • Request of your tailor to keep the original hem intact. If he/she doesn't understand or catch your drift, tell him/her to use the same color thread as used on other parts of the jean (usually gold).
  • To distress the bottom of your jeans after hemming, hold the bottom edge of the jean tight and rub with sandpaper or a nail file.

Bohemian Chic

If you haven't already noticed, the Bohemian look is one of the hottest trends of the moment. Inspired by gypsies, ethnic patterns and the '70s hippie scene, the boho trend is all about looking like you just threw on some clothes without thinking. African, Indian and Asian prints are combined with western pieces that allow you to mix and match clothes to create your own unique look. It's comfortable, earthy and feminine. To be a bohemian beauty, you'll need to put away those tight clothes. Skirts are the star of this fashion trend, so look for peasant or prairie skirts in solid colors (think whites/ivories, chocolates and teals) or ethnic-inspired prints, which you can wear with plain, fitted tanks and flip flops. If you're not into skirts, then pair your jeans with embroidered tops or floaty tunics. And don't worry about overdoing it - bohemian clothes look great with layered accessories so pile on some long necklaces, stones, turquoise and chunky bracelets, wrap a funky belt around your waist and step out in boots or beaded sandals.

Ecote Scarf Dress by Urban Outfitters ($68).
Beach Escape White Skirt by Francesca's Collections ($9.98).
Amber Printed Knit Tunic by Forever 21 ($15.80).
Turquoise Sea Drop Earrings by Stella & Dot ($29). (These were worn by the Bachelorette, Jillian, on a recent episode!)

A Short(s) Story

It's mid-summer and time to start thinking about investing in wardrobe items that will carry you through the Fall. If you live in an area of the country with mild-autumn temps, plan on flaunting your shorts right on through October! Wide Leg, Large-Pocket and Tie-Front shorts are everywhere now and are a flattering style on many body types. They look laid back with flats and ultra-sexy paired with heels or wedges. (Remember, adding a heel, or even a slight height to your shoe will make your bare legs appear longer and thinner...and who doesn't want that?!) As you transition into Fall, pair your shorts with blousy tops, long sleeve button-downs or simply throw on a fitted jacket over a tee and shorts outfit. Do not be afraid to tuck your shirt in...in fact, with the tie-waste short styles, you really need to tuck that shirt in! Another benefit to shopping for shorts right now is that most shorts are starting to hit the sale racks! Brown, Navy, Black, Khaki and Dark Denim are your best bets for wearing through the fall. Here's a few pairs to peruse:
1. BCBGeneration Belted Utility-Pocket Shorts in Dark Chocolate (were $78, now $29.25).
2. MICHAEL Michael Kors Cuffed Sailor Jean Shorts with Zipper Detailing in Dark Denim (were $69.50, now $39.09).
3. MICHAEL Michael Kors Belted Shorts in British Khaki (were $59.50, now $38.90).

Beads and Bracelets

Leather-banded, bead-strung bracelets are a "must have" accessory this summer...and will continue to heat up as a hot trend as Fall approaches. The trick is to layer these bracelets and to mix-up the colors. You can wear these with pretty much any and everything! Two lines to check out: First, Stella & Dot's new Zoe Bracelet ($34) available in 2 colors: Turquoise (pictured) and Chocolate Brown/Smoky at stelladot.com/editbylauren. I've been layering four of the Zoe Bracelets and can't take mine off! Second, Ronda Smith Designs offers a variety unique styles and colors, such as the Alyssa05 (pictured) for $68 at rondasmithdesigns.com.

Nordstrom Anniversary Sale Begins TODAY!

If you haven't ever shopped Nordstrom during its Anniversary Sale, make it a priority for this week be your first! The Anniversary Sale is like a "sale in reverse!" The store marks down brand new Fall merchandise store wide for 2 weeks (until August 2nd) and then raises the prices back to "original" pricing. How often is it that you can get brand-new items on drastic mark-downs?! (I am a huge fan of this concept and wish other stores would catch on to the novel idea!) If I were to post every impressive deal, this blog would take you days upon days to read...so I will just mention a few here. Make sure you make time to stroll through your local Nordstrom or browse online at Nordstrom.com.

1. The Dolce Vita 'Webber' Cuffed Bootie, available in brown (pictured) and in black. $139.90, after sale: $209.95.
2. The Cole Haan 'Howland' Penny Loafer (my hubbies favorite shoes!). $89.90, after sale: $148.00.
3. Michael Kors 'Jet Set Sport' Watch. $119.90, after sale: $180.00. (Note: This Watch is listed in the recent Anniversary Sale cataloge for this price, through not listed on sale on line. Nordstrom will honor this price, as listed in print.)
4. Caslon® Distressed Leather Jacket. $149.09, after sale: $228.
5. Shades of Couture by Juicy Couture 'Heritage' Aviator Sunglasses. $64.90, after sale: $98).

Happy Shopping!

Discover Madewell

If you haven't already, it's time to discover Madewell. Madewell has been making quality denim goods since 1937 and was recently acquired by the J.Crew Corp. Last Spring, I discovered Madewell at the oh-s0-cool pilot store in SoHo, NYC and it was love at first sight! Fortunately for all of us, Madewell is currently expanding around the U.S. (just opened at Lenox Mall in Atlanta) and may be coming to a mall near you very soon. Madewell is focused on providing superior denim products and wardrobe basics such as tees, scarves, leather purses and jackets. I love the stylish simplicity of the store's line. I recently bought several of Madewell's v-neck boyfriend tee's (2 for $30!) and am obsessed with the fit and softness! Mark your calendars for July 15th, when Madewell will be launching it's new denim line, '37's jeans, priced at only $59.50 and available in 5 washes and one amazing skinny fit! To find a store, click here. Sorry, guys, Madewell is just for us women!
